Hungry Donkey is a relatively new modern Greek restaurant in London. I’ve heard about this place and been meant to try it for a while now. For a catch up session with a dear Cypriot friend back in university, I thought it could be the perfect occasion to try this place out!

The restaurant is located in the heart of East London, specialising in Greek food. While I expected the place to be a hip, funky restaurant with loud Greek music playing in the background, it surprised me with all that jazzy music playing softly in the background. The setting is quite bright, lined with wooden tables and chairs in this simple canteen-style setting.

The menu offers an extensive range of classic Greek dishes, including nibbles, mezedes, salads, as well as souvlaki (wraps / platters) and traditional Greek dishes like Moussaka and Stifado. Since we both weren’t particularly hungry, we decided to simply go for a souvlaki wrap each and then share a hot mezedes.

Soutzoukakia (£6.50)

For the hot mezedes, we went for Soutzoukakia, which is cumin & paprika infused lamb meatballs that’s served in a rich tomato sauce – a classic dish in every Greek household.

These meatballs aren’t the round ones we typically see in Meatball Spaghetti. It’s more cylindrical like kofte kebabs. The dish was fragrant, garnished with Parmesan Cheese and Parsley.

The meatballs themselves were really tender and moist. I really enjoyed the flavours, which carries such beautiful fragrance. The coarse tomato sauce particularly got my approval, which was simply perfect to wipe clean with some pita bread. I just wish it comes with a bigger portion or even come as one hearty main dish served with rice or something.

Lamb Souvlaki Pita Wraps (£7.50)

For the sovlaki, since only lamb is halal, the Lamb Souvlaki Pita Wraps it is for me. On top of the lamb, I also cheekily added Halloumi (+£1) to mine.

The souvlaki pita wraps are all served with tomato, onion, tzatziki and paprika. As I bite into it, my first thought is ‘this is a bit cold’. As I then took another bite, this time including some lamb meat in it, and thank goodness it was warm. The lamb was warm, the wrap not as much but still have a certain degree of warmth, but because of the rest of the toppings, the whole wrap is rather cold in overall.

Nonetheless, I really liked the lamb. It was well seasoned and carries this subtle chargrilled flavours. The smokiness and spices on the meat makes the star of the dish. You can’t go wrong with halloumi. While the halloumi itself naturally taste great, I feel they could’ve added more of a chargrilled flavour to it to enhance the flavours. To sum it up, apart from the meat, the souvlaki wrap was relatively mediocre and a bit underwhelming to be frank.

All in all, I think this place is nice to visit if you’re around the neighbourhood. As to whether it’s super worth it, I think everything’s very nice in general but not particularly impressive enough for me to make regular visits. I’ve heard good recommendations on this place though so I guess it’s a bit of a hit and miss. Nonetheless I must say I absolutely love their jazz music playlist! It really sets this chill and relaxing mood, especially after a long day of work, and enjoy your evening with food at a casual setting.
