What is a mug cake

Mug cake is essentially cake made and cooked in a mug. You basically throw all the required ingredients into the mug, mix everything together, and then cook it in the microwave. Instead of a good 45-minute wait for baking cakes, a mug cake can be done from start to finish within 5 minutes.

It’s a super easy and hassle-free way to whip up a quick dessert treat, with minimal washing too (just the mug and spoons)!

Tips on making the perfect mug cake

  • Make sure you have all the ingredients thoroughly mixed in the mug. You certainly don’t want to discover a slab of flour as you dig into the cake!
  • Finding it difficult to mix in a mug? What you can do is mix the cake batter in a separate mixing bowl if it’s easier before pouring it into a mug (or a small bowl even).
  • The cooking time varies from microwave to microwave. Mine cooks at 1½ minute.
  • If this is your first time making the mug cake, I would recommend microwaving for 1 minute and then keep testing by 15-second increments until it cooks through (but still gooey inside). You don’t want to go straight for two minutes and end up overcooking it!
  • Do NOT overcook the mug cake. One con about microwaving is the loss of moisture. If you overcook the cake in the microwave, the cake would turn out dry and even rubbery in texture, which is not ideal.
