Before meeting my friend for a catch-up Lunch at Opso, I thought I should head out early and find a coffee shop nearby to do some work. After a quick browse, I ended up popping into Nordic Bakery at Marylebone to enjoy a coffee and pastry.
As you can tell from the name, the Nordic Bakery is a Scandinavian style coffee shop serving up coffee and pastries. Apart from this Marylebone branch at Dorset Street, they also have branches in Soho, Covent Garden, as well as another Marylebone branch at Cavendish Street.
The shop is fairly small, with a few additional tables in the downstairs area. The setting is very simple but a bit too packed to my personal preference. I got the impression that it’s more Finnish style, especially with the wooden walls and the laid back rustic vibe.
Cinnamon Bun (£3)
Given it’s called the Nordic Bakery, I ought to try out a Nordic staple – Cinnamon Buns. You can get the regular size or the mini ones. I got a regular one, which is actually quite big in size. And oh, I was right that Nordic Bakery is a Finnish coffee shop as their cinnamon buns come in the shape of Finnish-style korvapuusti, i.e. their version of cinnamon buns. As far as I’m aware, there are no major flavour differences with Finnish and Swedish cinnamon buns. It’s only the shape that’s different and distinguishes between the two styles.
The cinnamon bun wasn’t as sticky as I anticipated, which also means there’s not that much frosting/glaze over it. As a result, the cinnamon bun wasn’t too sweet at all. It’s fluffy in overall, with the fragrance of cinnamon seeping through every bite. But my personal preference lies with Fabrique Bakery‘s version more.
Latte (£2.90)
The latte came in a fairly large cup. I had pretty high expectations for the coffee as Nordic cities tend to have great reputation on coffee. Whilst I thought the coffee was good and decent, it wasn’t particularly impressive.
In summary…
…Nordic Bakery is generally quite a nice spot to pop by. Everything’s decent, though I personally would like to see things a bit more refined and leave a more memorable taste. What I like the most is the relatively generous portions for both the pastry and coffee. I must say I left with a more satisfying belly than I originally anticipated!
