Dark Sugars is my type of chocolate heaven. It’s a mixture of multiple factors that made me love the place. From the chocolate quality, variety, setting, vibe, music – it snatched my heart instantly. They no doubt offers one of the best hot chocolates in London and it would be a crime to not visit them every winter when it’s hot chocolate season!

There are two Dark Sugars shops in Bricklane. Both are along the same street and are only a 5-minute walk apart. More recently, they also opened one in Greenwich.

Dark Sugars started out as a stall at Old Spitalfields Market and Borough Market. Then, after a couple of years of extensive research & study on cocoa in South Africa and West Africa, Dark Sugars has offocially opened up a shop in Bricklane.

If you’re searching on Google Map, I visited the Dark Sugars shop, not the Dark Sugars Cooca House.

Walking into the shop, we were immediately surrounded by lots of chocolates. The interior follows a golden wood theme, setting an earthy tone and character to the shop. A huge variety of chocolates and truffles are displayed in wonky wooden bowls (do watch out some flavours contain alcohol). A staff kindly greeted us and offered some sample chocolate truffles. After the first taste, I was immediately hooked. The chocolate truffle was so luscious – rich but not overpowering, with a flawless balance of sweetness and natural bitterness. It was easily the best I’ve had.

After that, me and my friend just turned into excited kids, eager to try out more from the shop and, more specifically, their hot chocolate.

Their hot chocolate has been showcased widely on social media and both of us had been dying to try it out. The menu offers multiple flavours for their hot chocolates. Other than the classic one, there are a number of spiced flavours including Cardamon, Chilli, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Nutmeg. It’s super exciting to say the least.

Classic Hot Chocolate (£4)

Hot Chocolate topped with Chocolate Shavings at Dark Sugars

You know me, I like to keep things simple. So I went for the classic hot chocolate to see what they’re all about.

First of all, the most exciting part of this hot chocolate is all those chocolate shavings on top.  It couldn’t get more satisfying watching all these chocolate being freshly shaved from chocolate blocks in front of you and being piled up onto the cup. That is precisely how it blew up on social media.

In terms of flavour, the sweetness of the hot chocolate was just impeccable. It’s not the kind to be super rich like the ones at Said Dal 1923 or Paris’ Angelina where it’s thick and creamy. The chocolate was mixed with steamed milk, which is whisked to a foamy texture before blending with the chocolate. Texture-wise, it’s got this smooth milky touch which got just the right balance. The chocolate quality got to shine through without being overly rich. Basically, it’s an incredibly enjoyable cup of hot chocolate to indulge in!

All in all, we really enjoyed our time at Dark Sugars. Other than the great chocolate, the amazing playlist had us hanging around there for hours. When you’re having a great time, time just flies by. Whether it’s for a warming cup of hot chocolate or just to satisfy your sweet tooth, I’d definitely recommend checking this place out!
