In hunt of a good but affordable Indian restaurant in London, we came across Chettinad, a South Indian restaurant located just by Tottenham Court Road. It was an impromptu dinner and, to be honest, I wasn’t having any high expectation but was pleasantly surprised about the place.

The interior of the restaurant follows a dimmed wooden theme. It’s got a little rustic vibe and cosy feel. Its menu got a lot of options, from classic curries to thalis, and a whole page for dosas! Here is what we ordered:

Chettinad Starter Platter (£20.95)

Chettinad Starter Platter - lamb, fish, prawn, chicken

To start with, we ordered a starter platter. It’s got a little bit of everything, featuring a mouthwatering selection of Aadu Chukka (lamb), Poritha Meen (fish), Eral Poriyal (prawn), and Poricha Kolli (chicken).

Each of them were really nice and delicious, each to their own with its own robust flair of flavours. It’s hard to pick a favourite out of it! If I had to pick though, I would say the fish and lamb were my personal favourite.

Masala Dosa (£8.45)

Chettinad Masala Dosa

When having South Indian cuisine, having dosa is just a must. We went with the masala dosa, which consisted of a spiced potatoes filling. The staff kindly offered to divide the dosa into three portions for us (we’re a group of three).

It was overall very satisfying and quite hearty. The potato filling was quite generous and featured a mild piquant touch of flavours. Personally, I feel the pancake could be a little bit crispier around the edges. But all in all, we really enjoyed it.

Chettinadu Aadu (£10.95)

Chettinad Lamb CUrry

They say this lamb curry is an essential at weddings and a weekend favourite. Apparently, 23 different spices were used to cook it!

Flavour-wise, it was really rich and well-rounded. There was certainly a lot of flavours dancing around the taste buds at each bite, featuring deep umami flavours. The meat was cooked to an incredibly tender texture as well.

We also ordered some Poori (£3.95) to wipe this dish clean!

Chicken Biryani (£11.95)

Chettinad Chicken Biryani

Last but not least, we had a biryani. The biryani was piquant, spicy, and wonderfully moist to taste. The portion was just right to share between the three of us.

In summary…

Chettinad has been a very pleasant surprise with delicious offerings at very reasonable prices. If you’re around west end, more specifically by Tottenham Court Road, I’d highly recommend hitting up Chettinad for a satisfying Southern Indian feast.
