Eggslut got plenty of hype when they first launched in London. The idea of an egg sandwich specialist restaurant has somewhat succeeded well as people flock and queue to spend a steep £9 on a scrambled egg sandwich. But it perhaps also revealed the gap for fresh quality and perfectly executed eggs on the market that made it such a huge draw in the first place. Having identified the gap, which is probably even bigger in the halal food scene, Eggoland is born.

The Story of Eggoland

It’s not just another restaurant jumping on the hype train though. Eggoland also comes with a story. A story where founder, Sohail Ahmed, found himself alone at the back of a lorry at the age of 12, fleeing from Afghanistan and ended up in the UK to seek refuge. He eventually carved his path as a professional boxer and personal trainer, and now decided to try his hand in the food industry. Why eggs? In addition to his love for eggs, the main drive of Eggoland comes from his frustration of not being able to order his eggs just the way he likes them. What better way than to take matters into your own hands and launch your own eatery!

Eggoland neon reflection from my window seat

Located just around the corner from Goodge Street station, you won’t be able to miss the shop’s striking and vibrant colours. I visited on a Saturday morning and it was on the quieter end. Perhaps it’s the August summer holiday lull but I was actually surprised that it wasn’t already a busy hit. Blocks of reds, blues, and splashes of egg illustrations adorn the walls, with a large neon light of the restaurant name hanging by the centre. It’s got lots of character but without going over the top.

There are plenty of options on the menu, from vegan & vegetarian options to breakfast sandwich classics, and to more creative and “luxurious” options such as confit duck and middle eastern-inspired lamb, etc. Some side dishes including hash brown bites and salad are also available, as well as desserts and ice cream. Everything is halal at Eggoland.

The Food: What We Ordered

The Staple (£8.50)

The Staple Sandwich at Eggoland

I opted for The Staple, which consisted of housemade beef sausage patty, soft scrambled eggs, chives, cheddar cheese, chipotle mayo & mixed leaves. Every component of this sandwich has been perfectly executed. Not only was the beef sausage patty juicy and aromatic, but it was also bursting with freshness. The melted cheese on top was lusciously gooey but then the scrambled eggs just took it to another level.

These are easily the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had. From taste to texture, it’s sheer perfection. The quality of eggs really spoke for itself and with the right touch of seasoning, it won me over from the very first bite.

If you want me to put this side-by-side with Eggslut’s sandwich, without hesitation, I’d go for Eggoland. I did criticise then, for Eggslut, that £9 is extortionate for just a scrambled egg sandwich, but this one I’d happily pay for again and you definitely get more out of the value comparatively (i.e more filling such as the meat & mixed leaves).

Karak Chai (£2)

cup of Karak Chai

For drinks, I went with the Karak Chai and I didn’t expect it to hit the spot so good. It’s the perfect balance of spice and sweetness, and so smooth & velvety to taste as well. That warming sensation from a good cup of chai was just the perfect finish to this meal. I’m totally craving for one right now as I write this.

Summary

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Eggoland and would no doubt recommend you to visit. The quality of food truly speaks for itself and it’s amazing to hear the inspiring stories behind the place as well. If anything, it sends the message that you can achieve anything in life if you put your mind to it despite hardship. During my visit, the staff were really friendly and cheerful, and really live-and-breath the story and values of the place. I wish nothing but the best for Eggoland and hope to see it going to places in the very near future!
