There was all this hype before I left for my Hong Kong trip…Eggslut has opened up in London! All the way from Los Angeles, starting out as a food truck back in 2013, Eggslut has now landed in London and opened up a shop at the very heart of Nottinghill.

I keep hearing about long queues at this place, which I’m not surprised about. But going on a Saturday afternoon, I’m surprised to find Eggslut London not being as swarmed as people have been making it out to be. There’s a staff by the door handing you the menu and asking you to wait outside for a bit. But that’s more for easing the queue for the cashier rather than seating. In fact, I was surprised to find quite a lot of seating at the shop.

Fairfax Sandwich (£9)

Fairfax Sandwich at Eggslut, London

I went for the classic Fairfax Sandwich – soft scrambled eggs with chives, topped with cheddar cheese, sriracha mayo, caramelised onions, sandwich in between these fresh brioche buns.

This definitely isn’t just your regular egg sandwich. The scrambled eggs were cooked to this perfect fluffy texture, oozing a buttery taste. I enjoyed the caramelised onions (as always), as well as that mild garlicky touch from the chives. The sriracha mayo gave it a slight kick as well. However, while all these flavours were great, it seemed to me the flavours of the egg itself didn’t shine through. My verdict is that – it’s good but not worth £9!

In summary…

All in all, I thought Eggslut London is certainly a unique spot and it’s always nice to see London’s food scene growing. However, £9 is quite an extortionate price for a sandwich. They boast themselves as an “egg specialist”, yet the egg sandwich lacked an eggy flavour. Perhaps it’s all that Hollywood hype that makes people willing to pay that price for just a sandwich. I’d say go try it once and see for yourself whether it’s worth it or not. As I said, it’s great, but just not for that price.
