I think you all know by now I have a little soft spot for Japanese patisseries. Sakurado has been on my radar for quite some time but I hadn’t really managed to squeeze in a visit to their South Kensington branch. When they announced the opening of another branch in Chinatown in late 2020, I had every intention to visit but – oh well – we’ve been told to stay at home. But luckily, Sakurado offers not just local delivery (via Deliveroo), but also nationwide delivery! So I placed an order via their website to finally try them out.

Sakurado: Franco-Japanese Mille Crepe Specialist

Sakurado prides itself as a Franco-Japanese Mille Crepe specialist. Their menu offers a wide selection of Mille Crepe cake flavours. Many of them feature unique Far East flavours, such as Sweet Potato, Black Sesame, Yuzu, Hojicha etc., as well as less conventional flavours such as Red Velvet, Tiramisu, Caramel, Coconut, and so on. Each Mille Crepe cake comes in 30 layers that are delicately filled with rich and velvety cream in between. The best news is that pretty much their entire menu is halal, with one exception for the Rum Canele.

The Cakes: What We Ordered

Basque Burnt Cheesecake (£5.25)

Before diving into the Mille Crepes though, I would like to start with the Burnt Basque Cheesecake, which was the most delightful surprise from Sakurado. From all the different Mille Crepe flavours I tried, I ended up liking the cheesecake the most. The cake was so lusciously moist and creamy to taste, with a soft and gooey texture, and oozing a rich cheese flavour. If I were to return or buy again from Sakurado, the Burnt Basque Cheesecake would be what I’d go for!

Mille Crepe (£6.25 per slice)

Tiramisu Mille Crepe

The Tiramisu Mille Crepe certainly caught my eye the very minute I went scrolling on their menu. Firstly, it’s not quite a common flavour you’d typically see with Mille Crepe. Secondly, as you can see from the picture, it features a different texture with a layer of hand-whipped mascarpone sandwiched in between the Mille Crepe layers. It’s no doubt quite an intriguing creation and it tasted pretty fantastic too. In particular, I really enjoyed the blend of coffee and cocoa flavours. It tasted like an actual tiramisu but with a more layered texture and was thoroughly enjoyable.

Vanilla Mille Crepe

Here’s to the king of Mille Crepe cake flavour. You can’t go wrong with sticking to a classic. It’s a classic for a reason and the flavours of this Vanilla Mille Crepe were very nice. I enjoyed the lightness of the vanilla cream. The flavours were simple but it’s no short of delight at every bite.

Sea Salt Caramel Mille Crepe

This one made it to my favourite flavours. Caramel isn’t normally my go-to flavour but after seeing some good reviews, I decided to go for it. Surprisingly, I absolutely adored the delectable flavours in this one. The caramel flavour wasn’t overly sweet and I liked that the flavour was kept very delicate to the palate.

Red Velvet Mille Crepe

I could never resist a red velvet dessert. The Red Velvet Mille Crepe was a stunner by looks with its red and white colours so neatly layered together. Flavour-wise, it’s got a mild cocoa taste to it seeping through the palate but not so much on the cream cheese frosting flavour from a typical red velvet cake. It’s still a decent one that we enjoyed nonetheless.

Black Sesame Mille Crepe Cake Slice by Sakurado London

Black Sesame Mille Crepe

That striking black colour of the Black Sesame Mille Crepe is totally meant for catching attention. It’s a different style compared to that of Mille Patisserie‘s, which had a more nutty touch of flavours. This one has got a subtle and delicate bitterness that came from the charcoal taste lacing with the black sesame. It reminded me of Chinese Sweet Black Sesame Soup (芝麻糊) back home but in a form of cake!

Matcha Mille Crepe

When checking out a Japanese patisserie, a matcha-flavoured treat is, of course, on my radar to try. The matcha flavour from the cake was certainly stronger than expected and some may find it a little intense if you’re not a particular matcha fan. It’s extraordinarily creamy but tasted slightly denser than I anticipated. In other words, it’s slightly missing that fluffy airy texture from a Mille Crepe. Overall, it’s nice but not particularly a stellar slice, in my opinion. For the best Matcha Mille Crepe in London, we’d recommend checking out Katsure 100.

Pistachio Mille Crepe

As for the pistachio cake, one thing I was super glad about is that it didn’t have a strong almond aftertaste. However, I had been caught off guard by an unexpected tangy flavour which I discovered to be a passionfruit infusion. The passionfruit offered a mild zingy touch against the natural sweetness and nuttiness of the pistachio flavour. For pistachio alone, I liked it, but I’m personally not a fan of the fruity touch. For me, it just can’t beat the Pistachio Mille Crepe I had in Hong Kong from Lady M Patisserie.

Passionfruit Mille Crepe

Last but not least of the cake selection was the Passionfruit Mille Crepe. Fruit-flavoured cakes can be quite easily a hit and miss but Sakurado has managed to execute a good one. This Passionfruit Mille Crepe has got a sharp and tart flavour and was extremely tangy and zingy to taste.

Food Review Summary

All in all, I enjoyed the wide selection of cakes that Sakurado has to offer. Although in my utmost opinion, I did find the Mille Crepe slightly on the pricier end and not as worth the value. There’s definitely room to turn this already-good cake into a wowing one worthing over 6-quid a slice. But, as mentioned, I would definitely recommend their Basque Burnt Cheesecake instead, which turned out to be one of my favourites of all!
