There are just so many breakfast & brunch spots in London and it’s so hard to keep up! Especially when many of these places attract such long queues on the weekends so I never bothered to put the effort to queue and put up with a crowded breakfast experience. The Good Egg was one of those on the list but never managed to visit due to the mass volume of people on the weekends. However, as I cancelled my long-weekend trip to Barcelona, I decided to take advantage of those day-offs to check out the place.

Arriving around 10 am at Kingly Court during the week, the place was super quiet. Kingly Court has always been one of my favourite spots in London but the weekend crowd makes it rather unbearable. Since it was a sunny day as well, I decided to grab a table outside to enjoy some London sunshine while it lasts.

Here is a little background about The Good Egg. They started out as a neighbourhood restaurant in Stoke Newington, more precisely a Jewish deli taking inspiration from Tel Aviv and Montreal. Following their success in Stokey, they have then opened up a branch at Kingly Court, Carnaby. I haven’t been to their Stokey branch, but I can say their Kingly Court branch oozes a fun trendy vibe with a hint of retro American diner-style interior. It’s an interesting theme and fits well with the setting around Carnaby.

Shakshuka (£12)

Shakshuka with Halloumi and Sourdough Bread at The Good Egg Soho

The Good Egg is known for its Shakshuka. You can have it plain or add merguez sausage and/or halloumi (+£3 each or £5 for both) as an extra topping. In a mood to treat myself, I went for some extra halloumi.

The shakshuka came in a hot skillet and was served together with Brickhouse sourdough bread that’s drizzled with olive oil. Firstly, the tomato & vegetable stew was cooked to a rich luscious texture. It’s very smooth to taste but still retained a slightly chunky texture. It was well seasoned and the tomatoes were oozing of sweetness. Massive chunks of fried halloumi were in there, bringing a lovely savoury touch to the dish. While normally not a huge fan of yoghurt, I find myself really enjoying their preserved lemon yoghurt on the shakshuka. The yoghurt added a zingy touch to the palate which balances the saltiness from the halloumi and also added a creamy texture to the tomato stew. In overall, I really enjoyed the dish and it was pretty filling as well.

Flat White (£2.80)

And breakfast has to be completed with a cup of coffee and I went with a flat white. The coffee was decent. It was mellow and velvety to taste. Though the latte art seemed a little “clunky”.

In summary…

…I really enjoyed my breakfast experience here at The Good Egg. The food lived up to expectations and it was just so pleasant to have an al fresco dining experience when Kingly Court is quiet! The shakshuka was spot on and I would definitely recommend.
