Truffle, what a magical ingredient it is. Even just the thought of that signature earthy and perfumy aroma already makes me salivate. So when I heard of a restaurant named Truffle, it immediately got on my radar with all the heart-eyes emoji on my face. Admittedly, I’ve heard a bit of a mixed review for Truffle Soho, and that’s why it took me a little while to finally visit. The tendency of underwhelming halal burger restaurants didn’t help too and I really didn’t want to end up with another disappointing burger experience. But better late than never, we’ve finally tried out Truffle at their Soho branch and here are our thoughts.

Truffle Soho: luxury flavours made affordable

Truffle started out as a street food operation in 2017, with the goal of introducing luxurious truffle flavours to a wider audience in an affordable and accessible way. It is founded on a keen love for truffles and all the food on their menu features truffles in one way or another whether it be their beef/chicken/vegetarian burgers, sauces etc.

It’s not a huge space at the Soho restaurant but it’s got a warm and almost cosy vibe to it. There are some counter seats around the open kitchen and then some booth seatings towards the back. It’s good for small groups but maybe a bit tricky if you have a large group of more than 4 people.

The Food: What We Ordered

Both chicken and beef are halal at Truffle Soho. For any dish that contains Parmesan, they use vegetarian Parmesan and is, therefore, halal.

We were recommended by the staff to order any burger on the menu except the Cheeseburger (which we obliged). Only one of the burgers contain bacon but you can order it without the bacon and it will be handled & cooked separately – more of that below. Alcohol is served at the restaurant.

Truffle Butter Burger (£10)

90-day aged beef patty, beef fat caramelised onions, raclette cheese and truffle butter. This burger got all of my favourite burger components in there and was generally juicy to taste. I enjoyed the buttery flavours from the burger and it’s got a lovely subtle truffle fragrance seeping through. The truffle butter was the perfect chef’s kiss touch. It might not look much but it’s quite rich to taste. All in all, it’s a decent burger and a good munch.

The Truffle Burger (without Bacon) (£9.50)

Beef patty, raclette cheese, fig jam, crispy onion and Truffle mayonnaise. This burger originally has bacon in it but you can ask for it without the bacon and cook on a separate grill. The staff are well knowledgeable about catering to a halal diet so you can rest assured everything’s handled properly.

The Truffle Burger and the Truffle Butter Burger were quite similar to one another. The main differences were the crispy onions (instead of caramelised) and the fig jam. We enjoyed those additions as the crispy onions added a little texture, while the fig jam oozed sweetness. Though we felt it was missing that beefy and buttery flavours we tasted from the Truffle Butter Burger. While we liked the addition of the fig jam, it stole the centre of attention and perhaps overshadowed any truffle flavours in this particular burger.

Truffle Parmesan Fries (£4)

As mentioned before, vegetarian Parmesan is used so it’s a no brainer to order some Truffle Parmesan Fries for sides. A toss of truffle oil added an alluring earthy touch of flavours and umami to the fries. We wouldn’t mind a bit more cheese in there and would like the fries to be a little crispier. But overall, it was a delicious side dish and we munched through it very quickly.

Chicken Bites (£7)

Last but not least, we had the chicken bites, which are battered chicken thigh pieces coated with BBQ sauce and served with pickled red onion. These were a saucy delight and they come in bigger sizes than we expected. The coating wasn’t the crispiest – as in, it’s still technically crispy but missing a proper crunch when you bite into it. That aside, everything else was pretty spot on. The chicken was succulent and we enjoyed the tangy touch from the BBQ sauce.

Restaurant Review Summary

Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Truffle Soho. It’s good to know there’s a decent halal-friendly burger restaurant around Soho and West End after so many underwhelming experiences. No doubt that we enjoyed the truffle flavours from our meal and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t too overwhelming considering everything we consumed had a little touch of truffle. It’s subtle, with a little touch here and there that makes a good balance. We wouldn’t say it’s the best burger in town, but it’s definitely decent and amongst the better ones. The staff were very welcoming and friendly as well which definitely left a positive impression. All in all, if you’re around Soho and craving a good burger, Truffle Soho is a lovely option and you can wave bye to all the other average burgers nearby!
