Montenegro Halal Travel Guide

With dramatic mountain landscapes, picturesque Adriatic coastlines, and charming medieval towns, Montenegro is certainly an underrated travel destination in Europe. Many see Montenegro as a day-trip idea from Dubrovnik, Croatia, but it’s definitely a place worth spending more time exploring. We spent a week staying in Montenegro and had such a fantastic time. In this Montenegro halal travel guide, I’ve put together everything we learned about this European gem to help you plan for your next trip!

Where Is Montenegro?

Montenegro is a small Balkan country located in Southeast Europe along the Adriatic coast. It shares borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. Despite its compact size, Montenegro offers an incredible variety of landscapes, from crystal-clear beaches and medieval coastal towns to rugged mountains and national parks.

Its convenient location makes it easy to combine with nearby destinations such as Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Albania.

How to Get to Montenegro

There are two airports in Montenegro – Podgorica Airport (TGD) and Tivat Airport (TIV). However, limited airlines operate to these two airports. Instead, many people opt to fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia, which has more frequent flights, and drive down to Montenegro.

Getting Around in Montenegro

Unfortunately, Uber does not operate in Montenegro. Car rental is the best way to get around the country. We arranged for a car pickup to get us to and from the airport.

Alternatively, there are buses that connect the coastal towns

What Currency Does Montenegro Use?

Although Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, it uses the Euro (€) as its official currency.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. However, carrying some cash is useful when visiting smaller towns, local bakeries, markets, or family-run restaurants.

Best Time to Visit Montenegro

Personally, I think May or June is the best time to visit Montenegro. We visited in early June, and the weather was pleasantly warm (hot enough for swimming), with lush green scenery and fewer crowds.

Spring (April to June) – one of the best times to visit Montenegro. Warm temperatures, smaller crowd.
Summer (July to August) – peak tourist season. Hot weather that’s perfect for beach holidays.
Autumn (September to October) – another fantastic time to visit, with warm weather and fewer crowds
Winter (November to March) – not beach weather, but it’s still ideal for experiencing Montenegro’s mountain regions and winter sports destinations such as Žabljak.

Is Montenegro Muslim-Friendly?

Yes, Montenegro is generally considered a Muslim-friendly destination. Islam is the second largest religion in the country, and approximately 20% of Montenegro’s population is Muslim, which is mostly made up of Bosniak, Albanian, and Muslim Montenegrin communities. You can find mosques in cities like Podgorica and Ulcinj, and halal food is accessible.
