This Pistachio Hot Chocolate is creamy, nutty, and chocolatey, made with pistachio cream and real dark chocolate for the ultimate cosy drink. It’s incredibly easy to make at home and has just the right balance of rich chocolate and sweet, nutty pistachio flavours. If you’re a pistachio lover, this one is such a treat for the colder months!
Instead of using cocoa powder or pistachio-flavoured syrup, this recipe uses real dark chocolate and pistachio cream. The pistachio cream adds sweetness, nuttiness and extra creaminess all at once, while dark chocolate balances everything out so the drink doesn’t become overly sweet. It’s simple, yet indulgent, and comes together in just about 10 minutes.
Why You’ll Love This Pistachio Hot Chocolate Recipe
- Made with real chocolate – dark chocolate creates a wonderfully smooth texture and deeper chocolate flavour than cocoa powder alone.
- Proper pistachio flavour – pistachio cream gives the drink its distinctive nutty flavour without relying on flavoured syrups.
- Not overly rich – there’s no double cream in the hot chocolate, so it remains creamy and luxurious without feeling too heavy.
- Easy to make – everything comes together in one saucepan in around 10 minutes.
- Perfect for autumn and winter – it’s a lovely cosy drink for chilly evenings, Christmas movie nights or whenever you’re craving something a little special.

How to Get the Pistachio and Chocolate Balance Right
The biggest trick with pistachio hot chocolate is making sure the chocolate doesn’t completely overpower the pistachio. Pistachio has a much more delicate flavour than dark chocolate. That’s why I don’t recommend simply adding more and more chocolate in an attempt to make the drink richer.
For this recipe, I find that 100g dark chocolate with 2-3 heaped tablespoons of pistachio paste gives you a good balance where you can distinctly taste both.
The cocoa percentage matters too. If you’re using a particularly intense 70%+ dark chocolate, you may want to reduce the amount slightly.
Pistachio Paste vs Pistachio Cream: Which Should I Use?
I personally prefer using Pistachio Cream, as it’s already sweetened and naturally adds creaminess to the drink, whether it be a hot chocolate or coffee. My personal favourite is Black Milk Pistachio Cream.
If you prefer a much more intense nutty flavour, then Pistachio Paste would work as well. However, you’d likely have to add additional sugar to sweeten up the drink.
How to Make Pistachio Hot Chocolate
Ingredients You Need
Dark Chocolate
I recommend using a good-quality dark chocolate bar with around 55–70% cocoa solids. You want to get a deep chocolate flavour, but not too bitter or intense that it overwhelms the more delicate pistachio flavour. Make sure to chop the chocolate into small pieces so that it melts quickly and evenly into the milk.
Pistachio Cream
Pistachio cream gives this hot chocolate its sweet, nutty pistachio flavour and makes the drink extra creamy without needing to add heavy cream. You’ll find different styles of pistachio cream available, and the amount of actual pistachio can vary quite considerably between brands. I recommend choosing one with a good pistachio content for the best flavour. My personal go-to is Black Milk Pistachio Cream.
Milk
Whole milk gives the hot chocolate a beautifully creamy consistency without needing to add double cream. For something dairy-free, I’d recommend something naturally creamy such as oat milk.
Vanilla & Sea Salt
A little vanilla rounds everything out, while a tiny pinch of sea salt helps to bring out both the chocolate and pistachio flavours.
Toppings (optional)
If you want something extra indulgent, you can always add a small spoonful of whipped cream on top and some finely chopped pistachio for decoration!
Making Pistachio Hot Chocolate Step-by-Step

Step 1: Chop the chocolate
Chop the chocolate into small pieces so that it melts quickly and evenly into the milk. You can also grate it.
Add them into a milkpan together with milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
Step 2: Heat the milk
Gently heat the milk over medium-low heat until steaming. Don’t let the milk come to a vigorous boil. Keep whisking throughout until the chocolate has completely melted into the milk and the mixture is smooth.

Step 3: Add the pistachio cream
Scoop pistachio cream into your cup – about 1 to 1½ heaped tablespoons per cup. Pour the hot chocolate into the cup.
Step 4: Serve
Top your hot chocolate with a spoonful of whipped cream and a sprinkle of finely chopped pistachios.
Stir till the pistachio cream is mixed with the hot chocolate and enjoy while hot!
Recipe Tips for Making the Best Pistachio Hot Chocolate
- Don’t boil the milk. Gentle heat is all you need. Overheating milk can affect its flavour, and you don’t want the chocolate catching on the bottom of the pan.
- Finely chop your chocolate. Smaller pieces melt much more quickly and evenly.
- Adjust the chocolate to your pistachio cream. If you’re using a particularly intense dark chocolate, slightly less chocolate may actually produce a better pistachio hot chocolate.
- Serve immediately. Hot chocolate naturally thickens slightly as it cools and is at its best freshly made.

Pistachio Hot Chocolate Variations
| Variation | How to Make It |
|---|---|
| Dairy-Free Pistachio Hot Chocolate | Swap whole milk for a creamy plant-based alternative such as oat milk and use dairy-free dark chocolate. Make sure your pistachio cream is dairy-free too, as some brands contain milk. |
| Pistachio Mocha | Add a shot of espresso to each mug before pouring in the hot chocolate. The coffee balances the sweetness while pairing beautifully with both dark chocolate and pistachio. |
| White Chocolate Pistachio Hot Chocolate | Swap the dark chocolate for white chocolate for a sweeter, extra-creamy drink. Since both white chocolate and pistachio cream are already sweet, I’d recommend using less white chocolate. |
