Honey Za’atar Air Fryer Halloumi Recipe

Halloumi is probably my most favourite cheese. The salty, savoury edge of flavour makes it a great starter dish. With a mere quick grill or pan-frying, a plate of lip-smacking halloumi cheese can be ready in no time. But if you want to jazz up the flavours, halloumi is a versatile one to play around with. Additionally, it’s air fryer-friendly! In this air fryer halloumi recipe, I played around with the use of Za’atar and honey, which has recently become a favourite flavouring combo of mine.

A little touch of sweetness has always paired well with halloumi, in my opinion. When accompanied with Za’atar, there’s this addition of tangy and nutty flavours that just worked wonders with halloumi cheese. The usual grill or pan-frying method works, but air frying makes a great hands-off alternative. With the air fryer, you can basically just chuck it in and it will do the job for you. Once it’s in, you don’t have to worry about it while you tend to other things.

Honey Za'atar Air Fryer Halloumi

How to make Honey Za’atar Air Fryer Halloumi

Ingredients

  • Halloumi Cheese
  • Honey
  • Za’atar
  • Oliver Oil
What is Za’atar?

Za’atar is a spice mix consisting of a blend of toasted sesame seeds, dried sumac, salt, dried oregano, marjoram, and thyme. It is most commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisines and sometimes Mediterranean dishes. The sumac gives it a citrusy tangy flavour, while the dried herbs add an earthy touch to it.

Ingredients for making Honey Za'atar Halloumi

It’s all super simple and quick to put this air fryer halloumi recipe together. If you have time beforehand, it would be good to marinate the halloumi with the ingredients listed above for a little while before cooking. But worry not if you don’t have the time to, the recipe would work just fine. The idea is to have the Za’atar and honey mixture coating over the halloumi. Extra time in marinating would be ideal to let the flavours get through a little bit more, but not crucial to the recipe.

When it comes to halloumi, it’s important to NOT overcook it. When overcooked, halloumi cheese could come out rubbery in texture, which wouldn’t be particularly pleasant. For air frying halloumi, 5 minutes is all you need.
