Mestizo London Mexican Restaurant

Halal Mexican restaurants are not the easiest to come by. One of the original Mexican restaurants in London to start catering halal options ought to be Mestizo Restaurant in Euston. It was our very first restaurant visit coming out of the 2020 lockdown when restaurants were finally allowed to reopen for table service. Perhaps the excitement of finally dining out again played a part but we were hugely impressed with the food at Mestizo. It was a great insight into Mexican cuisine and we thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the meal.

Mestizo Restaurant: Halal Mexican Food in London

We are starting to see more halal meat options at various taco vendors popping around London these days but it’s still rather limited when it comes to more traditional Mexican dishes that are not the typical taco/burrito. That’s why Mestizo was a huge draw to me as they offer an extensive menu of traditional Mexican dishes. Chicken, beef, and selective lamb dishes are halal at Mestizo, but please double-check with the staff as suppliers may change. Pork and alcohol are served at the restaurant.

The Food: What We Ordered

Date of dining: July 2020

Complimentary Tortilla Chips & Salsa Verde

After ordering, we were given some complimentary tortilla chips, sprinkled with sea salt and accompanied by salsa verde. I really enjoyed the refreshing tangy flavours of the salsa, which was great for opening up the palate before the meat feast we’ve got for ourselves. They were a great nibble and munch while we waited for the food to arrive.

Filete Tampiquena (£26)

First up, we had the Filete Tampiquena, which consists of grilled beef fillet, chicken enchilada, guacamole, rajas con crema, and garnished with queso fresco ranchero. It’s basically a dish where you get to have a little taste of everything on one plate. The beef fillet steak was the main star of the dish. Nicely seared, well-seasoned, and tender to bite, it definitely hit the spot. Personally, I particularly enjoyed the rajas con crema, i.e. creamy corn, which got a very nice savoury touch to pair with the steak. As for the chicken enchilada, it’s got a sharp tangy touch and was not as spicy as I originally anticipated – it’s still great though regardless.

Lamb Barbacoa Tacos (£10)

This one’s my personal favourite at Mestizo. The lamb barbacoa was truly a stunner in its own right and I could honestly just eat it all day long. It’s that good. Expect extraordinarily juicy and flavoursome tender lamb meat, incredibly well-marinated and oozing rich umami. Simply put, it’s the best tacos I’ve ever had!

It comes with corn tortillas, salsa verde, chopped onions, and fresh coriander leaves – each served separately and you’ll have to assemble the taco yourself. Every little component here gives a little lift of flavours, especially the piquant salsa verde, and added more layers of texture to the lamb. I couldn’t praise this dish enough and you must go try it out yourself!

Mixiote de Cordero (£21)

For the last main dish, we went for the marinated lamb shank, which comes wrapped in banana leaf and steamed until tender. Without a doubt, the meat was succulent to taste and was cooked to the perfect melt-in-your-mouth tender texture. Flavour-wise, I absolutely adored the mild tingle of spices from it, with a subtle touch of heat seeping through onto the palate. The dish was really saucy as well, making it the perfect pairing with the rice & beans served on the side.

Drinks

A glass of Cozumel mocktail at Mestizo Restaurant

Apart from the usual soft drinks, Mestizo offers a couple of non-alcoholic drinks on its extensive drinks menu as well. Pictured is the Cozumel (£3.80) – a mocktail made with banana, coconut & pineapple juice. It’s nicely decorated with sugar lined at the rim of the glass and was refreshing to taste.

Another friend got the Agua de Jamaica (£2.60 per glass / £10 pitcher) – a refreshing cordial drink made with hibiscus flower, sugar and water.

Restaurant Review Summary

As I’ve already said at the beginning, we have thoroughly enjoyed dining at Mestizo and have found it quite an eye-opener to Mexican cuisine. Despite the lack of other Mexican restaurants to benchmark from, the taste buds don’t lie and we’ve been wowed by some of the amazing flavours that Mestizo offered. Especially for the lamb barbacoa tacos, we simply couldn’t rave enough about it! If you are looking to explore more of Mexican cuisine, we definitely recommend checking out Mestizo.
