I’ve been saving a visit to Zelman Meats for a birthday occasion. Finally, it’s here.
Zelman Meats has several branches across central London. For their Soho branch, there are fewer halal options, though you can still preorder other halal cuts 48 hours in advance. The St Paul branch doesn’t serve halal meats on their regular menu but, again, can be preordered 48 hours in advance. The Knightsbridge branch here offers halal options at all times.
The Knightsbridge branch of Zelman Meats is located at the 5th floor of the department store Harvey Nichols. Once seated down, the staff immediately asked if we’d be looking at halal options. All halal options are cleared marked with an asterisk (*) on the menu. They then kindly explained the whole menu and halal options for us, as well as any halal specials for the day.
So here’s what we ordered:
Cecina Wagyu Beef Ham
The dish consisted of Wagyu beef ham topped with rocket salad, sun-dried tomatoes, pine nuts, pomegranate seeds, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We absolutely loved the colours of the dish. Each slice was packed with a beautifully cured savoury flavour. It was very appetising as well especially with the touch of the balsamic vinegar.
I was originally anticipating for the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio as shown by a couple of other halal bloggers. However, they had just recently swapped the dish with this Cecina Beef Ham. Not complaining at all though since it was a pretty fantastic starter!
Now onto the steak. I went with Picanha steak. Albeit the cheapest option on the menu, this steak has had some raving reviews. In fact, many bloggers rated this steak better than the other slightly more expensive ones.
As per usual, I asked for medium-rare. The steak came out nicely sliced up. As you can see, it was cooked perfectly pink on the inside and there’s a perfect ratio of fat with each slice. The meat was so tender and had this melt-in-your-mouth sensation. It was beefy in flavour and the quality was supreme. That buttery flavour with a sharp savoury touch was simply to die for. I absolutely loved it and just wanted to order more.
For sauces to accompany the steak, I went with Chimichurri, which was pretty nice. Though personally, I think the steak’s been delicious enough on its own!
Instead of another steak, we decided to go for one of the specials and opted for the Wagyu Burger.
The burger came with a very simple presentation but its flavours were no short of simple. The burger was packed with flavours, featuring a luscious beefy taste. With the melted cheese smothered all over that patty, it added such a huge satisfaction to the palate. It also carried a piquant touch of spice from its toppings. All in all, it’s one great burger to savour.
Black Truffle Parmesan Chips
For sides, we ordered some Black Truffle Parmesan Chips. The chips came with a generous dollop of truffle paste and its aroma was swept across the whole table as it was served. The chips were of an incredibly huge and chunky size, each carrying a light crisp on the outside and super fluffy on the inside.
Last but not least, dessert. If you’re booking a table at Zelman Meats for a special occasion, the dessert would be on the house! When I was looking online, I didn’t see Chocolate Fondant on the menu. But since I have seen photographic proof out there on social media that it exists on the menu, I requested it on the phone when I was making the booking.
Flavour-wise the chocolate fondant was absolutely luscious and decadent. The centre was melty and gooey, and it hit all the right spots. My only criticism was that the centre didn’t seem to be warmed up thoroughly. There was an occasional bite or two where it felt a bit cold in contrast to the warmer bits. But other than that, everything was perfect.
…we really enjoyed Zelman Meats. It was a perfect meal for an occasion, with an amazing quality of food and superb service. What’s best is that it didn’t really hurt the bank. If you want somewhere casual but with good quality of food that fits for an occasion, this is one to be at the top of the list.
Partially halal. All halal steaks and dishes are clearly marked on the menu.
Other options can also be pre-ordered 48 hours in advance for halal requests.
